1979 - Mother Teresa awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
1992 - The United Nations General Assembly declares October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, to be observed beginning in 1993. Resolution 47/196 of 22 December 1992. (Now this is something really interesting - I am honoured to share this day with this ideal)
