FREE STUFF

Welcome! The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,667 groups with 6,311,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by entering it into the search box above or by clicking on “Browse Groups” above the search box. Have fun!

I have part of Freecycle in South Africa (Cape Town & Durban) and Northern Ireland. Its fun and environmentally friendly.

EVER DONE THIS???

Swishing

Dictionary Definition: To rustle, as silk.

Our definition: To rustle clothes from friends.

The Art of Swishing involves getting your friends together to swap gorgeous clothes and party at the same time. Every lady must bring at least one good quality, clean item of clothing, or an accessory, that she'd feel proud to hand on. (Large sacks of designer frocks are also gratefully received. And people who bring along anyone else with a bulging wardrobe.)

Swishing Rules

  • When the swish opens, whatever people take is theirs
  • Everybody must bring at least one item but can leave with as many as they like
  • No one can claim items before the Opening of the Swish

Blue Bottles

HEADS OR TAILS

It is one of the most unpleasant experiences you can have. I have experienced been stung by these Blue Bottles twice in my lifetime on the Durban Beach front (South Africa). The worst part is that they re able to sting even when lying dead on the beach.

"Blue Bottles: are also known as Portuguese Man (or Men) O’ War. Their scientific name is Physalia physalis. Blue Bottles are dangerous organisms. Their tentacles are able to deliver painful stings to swimmers."

Tips for colds and flus

You can guess whats happening to me.
Yip , after a great holiday with family, I have gotten sick. ARGHHHHHHHHH.
The over-counter medicine does not seem to be helping and now my ear has gotten sore.

Planning to go to the pharmacist and if that does not help I will have to make a doctors appointment.

In the process of looking for some things I could do for myself I found this article of WebMD:

9 Tips to Treat Colds and Flu the 'Natural' Way

My doctor in South Africa gave this remedy - it worked for me. I felt very uncertain whether I was following his directions correctly, the first time I did it.
Using toooo much salt can cause discomfort and a headache, so be careful.

The simple regimen of performing a nasal wash is quite akin to the jal neti of yoga. This entails boiling some water in the morning for at least 5 minutes and then allowing to cool till it is lukewarm. Now fill a glass (approximately 250 ml.) with this water and add a heaped teaspoon of salt. Now take a 10 ml. Syringe (plastic disposable used for injection without the needle) and fill it. Alternately you can use a small utensil which is called sagar (and has a spout). Go to the washroom and standing in front of a mirror with the washbasin below, tilt your head backwards and pour the solution in one of the nostrils. Allow the solution to go in and then bring your head forwards so that the solution can come out. Repeat the process in the other nostril. And also keep on doing it alternating it in the nostrils till the glass is empty.

Free association is described as a "psychonanalytic procedure in which a person is encouraged to give free rein to his or her thoughts and feelings, verbalizing whatever comes into the mind without monitoring its content." Over time, this technique is supposed to help bring forth repressed thoughts and feelings that the person can then work through to gain a better sense of self.

That's an admirable goal, but for the purposes of this excercise, we're just hoping to have a little fun with the technique. Each week I'll post ten words to which you can respond to with the first thing that comes to mind.

"Rules are, there are no rules." There are no right or wrong answers. Don't limit yourself to one word responses; just say everything that pops into your head. AND you don't have to have your words up on Sunday. Take all week if you want!

Going Green

I am in a swap where for one year we will be sharing ideas for going green. This is my contribution for January 2009. I hope to share partners idea with you later on in the month.

Reduce
Buy a battery recharger - One of the best investments I have made.

Batteries contain dangerous metals that aren't combustible and shouldn't go in a landfill," says Hershkowitz. Over time, the charger will pay for itself, since you'll no longer shell out for new batteries every time your camera or torch or whatever runs out of juice.

Recycle
I found this great video on a number of things you can do with your Christmas or other cards.
Recycling Christmas Cards

Re-use
Growing a herb garden has been one thing I have always wanted to do and never really got round to it. I found this craft while doing another swap - I may use tins instead of ice-cream containers but I hope to share photos in next few months of my own herb garden.

"People often say that motivation doesn't last.
Well, neither does bathing -
that's why we recommend it daily."
